Amanda's questions for 7-17-18

  1. Considering all the points that Inoue made, can you say that you don’t judge language with some kind of racial lens? Follow-up: In what ways will you try to keep racial judgment of language out of your classroom?

  2. Shipka speaks to the way multimodal assignments can expand a student’s ability to express themselves and take full ownership of the work they create. Will you accept these ideas and incorporate multimodal assignments into your classroom?

  1. Hi Amanda,

To answer your first question, I don't think it's possible to not judge language through a racial lens. The author points out that language and bodies are tied together--we can't separate our perceptions of the two. However, this does not mean that we can't be critically aware of our own biases towards language. If we can acknowledge and challenge our own biases, we will be better equipped to make our classrooms inclusive learning environments. I think assignments that use different Englishes could be incorporated into the classroom to demonstrate that all Englishes are communicative. This sort of assignment can inspire reflection on why we use the English that we do in academic institutions.
