Farrah Hersh Q's 7/17

Shipka
Does using a multimodal approach in the classroom cater to the strengths of the student allowing them to choose what they may be good at, including a typical essay format, in addition to something more digital or project based?

Inoue
Inoue speaks about a more diverse faculty, if a diverse faculty is not possible, should we as teachers make our syllabi or curriculum more diverse? I think we have the freedom to do that in higher education rather than in high schools, where things may be more state mandated.

  1. Farrah, regarding your question on the Shipka reading, I imagine the multimodal approach is flexible enough to cater to most students, but some of the resulting projects would likely wind up more traditional than others. That is to say some students will take a creative approach while others might fear taking risks. I don't think this is an issue, as long as the grading system fairly accounts for those variations.

  2. Hi Farrah,
I think syllabi should include diverse voices, and I believe the academic environment has been changing to embrace them. Many female authors in the pre-modern era have been discovered and highlighted, and Anglophone literature has been included in many curricula too. As you mention the difference between higher education and high schools, I think scholars of humanity departments in universities should be the one who leads the change in high school education too.

  3. Hi Farrah,

I definitely think we should strive to try and make our curriculum more diverse and more inclusive in general. Otherwise, a student's specific education will be impacted primarily by the racial and educational perspective of their instructor, which may lead to communication disparities between students with different instructors. I know its likely extremely difficult to suggest we can normalize an all-inclusive curriculum, I think its the optimal goal.
