Laura Smith Questions 7/17

1) Inoue problematizes and argues against teaching and assessing based on "standardized" English, but as a new teacher, I don't have any idea how to balance the goals of my writing class and the goals of my institution with the racial issues associated with judging students based on the dominant English discourse. I am interested in labor-based grading, as she mentions, but what would that look like in a writing classroom? In the classes that we are teaching at FSU, do we have options that allow us to account for multiple Englishes in our assessment practices? 

2) Bill Hart-Davidson talks about genres as being defined by community expectation, and therefore constantly open to change and development. How do we teach students useful aspects about different genres when they are changing, and how can we challenge students to explore and push the limits of different genres in their own writing?
