Dorothy's July 12 Qs

What are some Grammar B techniques (such as crots, collage/montage, double-voice, etc.) that you can see yourself incorporating into your composition classroom? How valuable do you think it is to encourage students to experiment with different kinds of grammar?

While standard academic English is by no means the “correct” way to articulate ideas, that is the English that many of our students will be using in their professional lives and in their other classes. How can we strike a balance between encouraging students to experiment with alternate forms of grammar while still building their skills with the traditional grammar used in U.S. academic settings?

  1. Hi Dorothy,

I think that it is possible to introduce both traditional and non-traditional grammar practices in the classroom. This can be achieved by using a variety of different assignments. For example, having a research paper but then requiring students to reframe their paper into a different medium, change the voice, alter the audience etc... In order for this to be successful though we have to grapple with the natural hesitation to experimenting that students will inevitable encounter when they are encouraged to write texts that goes against traditional grammar practices (which is more or less all that they have known).
