Pat July 5th Questions

1.     Tara Wood et al. in “Where We Are: Disability and Accessibility” mention that “instead of rules or norms flowing from teachers to students, we see classrooms as spaces where teachers, along with students, explore and discuss and write to audiences with the knowledge that disability is us” (148). What methods can composition teachers use to create truly collaborative spaces in their classrooms where students can feel free to engage with disability as a “central, critical and creative lens” (148)?

2.     Royster, discussing the need for reciprocity in communication between communities, state that the “challenge is to teach, to engage in research, to write, and to speak with Others with the determination to operate not only with professional and personal integrity, but also with the specific knowledge that communities and their ancestors are watching” (33).  While hopefully this is something that every teacher and student embraces, what methods can a comp. teacher use to make sure that every student respect the subjectivity of others as well as safely navigate the contention that will eventually arise in contact zones?
